A normal morning at anchor, and I’m waiting for the diver, at 12:15 pm I get a call, the diver is running a little longer than he thought and it will be more like 2:30 pm, but he will definitely be coming. By 2:30 pm I’ve got nothing, but rather than call again I figure I’ll give it another 30 minutes and see what happens. Just then I get a call and he is on his way, he asks for my address. Huh? I tell him that I’m anchored in the middle of Lake Sylvia, and he says ‘ya, what’s the address so I can drive over to you’. I tell him ‘you are not listening, I’m not on a dock or in a slip, I’m anchored in the middle of Lake Sylvia’. He says ‘Oh, I can’t dive if you are not tied to a dock’. What???? ‘You can’t dive in the middle of a lake? I can get a boat to bring you here (thinking of my brother’s boat). I’ve made it clear from the beginning that I was at anchor’. He says ‘I’ll have to call my boss, the one with the COVID’. He calls me back 4 minutes later and his boss said, ‘we would do it if there were two divers. But we can’t with just one’. I thinking, it would have been nice to have known that on Sunday. I spend the rest of the day calling all the divers in South Florida and each says the same thing. Divers can’t dive in open water; they have to do it dockside. So with that news, my solo dive is back on the schedule for Thursday morning and I’ve only wasted three days. I inform my brother that I’ll need to be picked up tomorrow at 9:30 am after my dive.
