George Town, Day 6 [Friday Feb 18]

I had a typical Sarah breakfast this morning, but without a second mouth to hog-up all the extra pancakes and syrup… not that I was watching. Anyway, the winds are light this morning and it is looking like I’ll finally be making the NAPA store run today. I’ll wait until after the George Town Cruisers Net at 8:00, and then depart around 9 or so.

I left in the dinghy for the NAPA store around 10:30 am, it’s a 2 ½ mile trip across Elizabeth Harbour to the north. As I got to the cove where the beach is to land the dinghy, I saw a catamaran come into the cove, both he and I were heading for the beach. The cat stopped short and the single person on board went forward to drop the anchor, I glanced over my shoulder at him as I was getting closer to the beach, he motioned me over. I’m thinking what’s this all about… Is he having trouble of some kind? I get close to the boat and slow down, he says to me, ‘how’s your day going?’, ‘Just fine’, I say, he says, ‘I just got here’, [me] ‘OK, is there something you need?’, [him] ‘where are you headed in such a hurry?’, [me] ‘the auto parts store, I need some oil for an oil change’, [him] ‘you know where it’s at then’, [me] ‘right on the other side of the beach, why do you need some engine supplies?’, [him] ‘no, I was just wondering’, [me] ‘OK, sure, sure… I going to keep going to the store then’, [him] ‘ya, good idea’. Some people just have difficulty keeping it all together in the solitude of single-handed sailing. I just kept hearing Twilight Zone Music and looking around for Rod Serling. The store is about 2 minutes from the beach, shortest walk yet. 10 minutes later I was back at the dinghy and pushing off, the ride back was much wetter than the ride over since I was headed into the swells and chop.

On my way back I took a route that had me pass through the Monument Beach anchorage, this is where one of the boats that had the dental adhesive was located. On the way across the harbor I tried to raise them on the VHF portable, but with no luck. All I knew was that they were in a ketch named Brigadoon, I motored behind every ketch to read the name and of course it was the last one in the anchorage and I almost missed it. I saw a gentleman working on something in the cockpit, once I was closed enough, I said ‘Ahoy there’, he lifted his head and said hi, I told him I’m the guy with the crown that keeps falling off. He yells below, Honey, the tooth guy is here. She come up with the package of adhesive and give it to me, I offer to pay them, but they say no need, the guy proceeds to tell me about a filling that fell out of one of his teeth and that is what they used the adhesive to fill. I thanked them again and was off to Aine.

Back on board I ate lunch, and using the new adhesive did a new glue job on the crown, we will see how it feels after dinner. Next it is time to use the new oil, I get out the oil vacuum pump and suck out all the used oil from the engine, put the new oil in, take the old oil out of the vacuum pump and pour it into an empty one-gallon metal container. Next it’s time to vacuum the interior of the boat to remove all the sand, and lint that accumulated, then clean and sanitize the counter tops. Domestic work done for the day, I just chill, planning dinner.

Breakfast – Pancakes with Mrs. Butter-Worth’s original syrup (it has all the original sugars left in, yum), Tea, Lunch – Ham & Turkey, Cheddar Cheese, sandwich with Hellmann’s Mayo, Dinner – Tuna, butter and herb rice, corn (butter, salt, and pepper), mandarin oranges.
