Black Point [Wednesday Feb 9]

I was up by 6:30 and on my way in the dinghy by 7:00 am. We will have to drop the mooring by 11:00 (check out time), so I went to SCYC to deposit some of our trash ($6.00 per bag). I did not want to disturb those who were still sleeping, so I rowed the dinghy over the channel to the dinghy landing. No one was moving at the Yacht Club, I found the trash truck, tossed in my bag and made my way back to the office, which was boarded up (ala wooden hurricane shudders), the shutters were not latched so I opened one, dropped my payment on the desk and closed the shudder. Headed back to Aine, using the motor this time. At 8:45 we left in the dinghy for the Thunder Ball Grotto dive site, 2 other dinghies were there when we arrived, which showed us where the entrance was. Sarah wanted me to swim in with her, but I did not like that idea without fins, Sarah followed another couple into the grotto and I sat in the dinghy.

Grotto entrance.

I knew at some point I was going to need to be able to get back in the dinghy alone after swimming or snorkeling. I fashioned a rope ladder like the one I had made for Sarah at the plane, took off my shirt and rolled off the dinghy into the water. I swam for a bit, felt the current picking up and didn’t want to be swept away, using the rope ladder I got myself back into the dinghy. Sarah took the underwater camera and took pictures. She returned about 10 minutes later and we were off to Aine. We secured the dinghy to the davits, hoisted the engine, and we were off to the next stop, Black Point on Great Guana Cay.

While we were at SCYC I noticed some sharks hanging around a fish filleting table, one of the local Bahamian guys saw me and said ‘watch this’, he started banged on the table with his hand (making the sound that is made when fish is being cut up. At filleting tables the meat is cut into fillet and saved, the remains are flung into the water. You do the math.) and within one minutes there were 20 to 30 sharks swimming around. They congregated near a set of stairs that descend into the water where they sharks were. I took these videos, on one of them I decided to back out not knowing that one of them was on his way over to say hi there. We motored out through the same shallows we encounter on our way in to Pig Beach, once we got to deeper water, we increased speed and motored the whole way, the wind was very light and on our nose so no sails today. The trip was a breeze. Up from behand us a cat called Heaven passed, I could tell they were headed for the same place as we were. Heaven got about 3 boat lengths in front of us and then we started gaining on him, (I didn’t change my speed. All I can figure is that he had a current against him that we didn’t have). We passed him now and were 5 boat lengths in front when we made the turn into the harbor. Lots of sailboat in the harbor, but it’s another big one. We dropped anchor, lowered the dinghy and went to town.

Sadly, again, no damn bakery, that’s all I’m going to be saying about that. We started walking toward the center of town, (there is only one road, so it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to make the right decision… its 50-50, left or right). Found a grocery store run by an Asian woman (didn’t expect that here), I bought a diet coke and we kept walking, we found a pizza place with an open sign lit up. Both of us were hungry and pizza would hit the spot we thought, I walk in, no one anywhere to be seen, I walk around for a while but nothing. Well OK, out the door and we keep going up the road, and then we saw it, it was nirvana, was it a mirage? Was the hunger so intense that it was showing us things that did not exist? We saw an outdoor deck with 2 huge umbrellas shading 20 tables, at two tables were 6 couples talking and drinking beer. OMG, beer! They were drinking beer outside. The name over the door said Lorraine’s Café, we waved at the group on the deck and made our way toward the door, it opened quickly and out steps a Bahamian woman with a hair-do (I mean a hair-do…), painted finger nails with diamonds on them, dressed nicely but not overdone, she asks what are you looking for? I say, ‘we’re hungry’, she says, ‘go to the bar and tell them your hungry and say Lorraine sent you in’. We did just that, we were handed menus, we ordered and told them we would be eating outside. The first thing you notice when you walk in is the volume of Steeler stuff everywhere. On the walls, hanging from ceiling, and on the truck outside. Being a Steeler fan, it gets your attention. We walked back outside to join the ‘beer drinking crowd’, a bottle of Sands in my hand, I came to the conclusion, (based on the age of each of them and the fact that they were all couples), these must all be cruisers. All the sailboat in the harbor was a dead giveaway too. Lorraine was sitting with them and I walked up, she asked me, ‘did they help you out inside’, I said, ‘yes, we ordered lunch’, all the couples said that this has the best meals in town. I ask Lorraine, ‘who is the Steeler fan?’, she says, ‘I’ll tell you what happened, one of the Steeler’s quarterbacks showed up one day with other Steeler players and we got to talking and after he left he sent me all of this stuff’, one of the other cruisers says, ‘Was it Ben Roethlisberger?’, she says, ‘ya that was him’. We sat with the cruiser and joined the group talking for a while. They eventually left, our food arrived and we ate lunch. Good food! We walked after lunch for a while, my step-watch vibrated that I had reached my 5000 daily step target, so it was time to turn around and given the black clouds headed in our direction, it was time to get back to the boat before the skies unloaded on us.
